Many users find it essential to switch from the new Outlook interface to the classic version. However, making this transition can be a bit challenging due to unfamiliarity, missing features, or personal preference for the previous style.

How to Switch from Outlook New to Outlook Classic

Some individuals may find the new interface less user-friendly or struggle to locate certain functions that were more accessible in the original version. Additionally, software issues and performance problems may lead users to go back to the classic view.

Some of them even report Outlook not responding or not being able to display folders.

This article will guide you through four easy methods to switch from the new Outlook to the classic interface.

  • Uninstall the new Outlook and keep only the original app.

4 Methods to Easily Switch from Outlook New to Outlook Classic:

Going back to the original Outlook UI doesn’t have to be difficult. Here are a few simple ways to get you through your transition quickly and smoothly.

Method 1: Press the Toggle Switch

Turning off the toggle switch is one of the easiest ways to return to the original Outlook interface. Microsoft has included a feature in the application that allows users to alternate between modern and traditional views.

  • Launch “Outlook”.
  • Navigate to the upper-right corner of the screen and click on the toggle switch to disable it.
Disable the Toggle Switch for New Outlook

This will revert the interface to the classic view and it will now be the default interface.

Method 2: Make a Desktop Shortcut for the Outlook (Classic) Software

Another easy way to open the original Outlook is to make a desktop shortcut. With the help of this method, you can easily access Outlook without having to go through menus each time and immediately launch the traditional version.

  • Close any “Outlook” instances that are open.
  • Right-click a blank space on your desktop.
  • Choose “New” from the context menu and then choose “Shortcut”.
Desktop, right click New then Select New Shortcut
  • Enter the path to the old Outlook executable in the location field. Typically, you can find this under C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\OfficeXY\OUTLOOK.EXE (change OfficeXY with the version number of your application, for example, Office16 for Office 2016).
  • Give your shortcut a name (such as “Outlook Old”) and click “Next”.

  • For the shortcut to be created, click “Finish”.

Method 3: Make Changes In the Windows Registry

If the previous solutions don’t work, consider modifying the Windows Registry. Take caution, since making the wrong adjustments can cause instability in your system. Making a System Restore Point before you begin is a smart idea.

  • Copy the path below, open “Windows Registry”, and paste it into the Registry Editor’s address bar. Then press ‘Enter’.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\<version>\Outlook\Preferences
(Use your version number instead of <version>; for example, 16.0 for Office 2016)
  • On the right side, search for the “UseNewOutlook” value. Create the value if it doesn’t already exist there. To do this, choose “New” > “DWORD (32-bit) Value” by performing a right-click in the empty area on the right side.
  • Give “UseNewOutlook” the name of this newly formed value.
  • Double-click the “UseNewOutlook” value now, and in its “Value data”, put “1”. To save the changes, click “OK”
Change the Windows Registry
  • For the modifications to take effect, exit “Registry Editor” and restart your computer.

Method 4: Uninstall the Outlook ‘New’ Application

Another way is to uninstall the new Outlook if it was installed separately. Although this method is simple, it must be handled carefully to avoid interfering with other Office applications.

  • Using ‘Win + I’ shortcut, navigate to “Settings”.
  • Open the “Apps” > “Installed Apps” menu.
  • Locate the “Outlook” (new) app by scrolling down the list.
  • After clicking on the app, choose “Uninstall”.
Uninstall the Outlook (New) Application
  • To finish the uninstallation process, adhere to the on-screen directions.
  • To take effect, restart your computer.

And that’s it, you should now successfully toggled from New to Classic Outlook!
