If search inside the Windows 11 Start menu is not working, the search interface may be stuck, a Windows component may need repair, or an update may be pending. Try these steps.
1. Restart Windows Explorer
Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Find Windows Explorer, right-click it, and select Restart. Test Start menu search again.
2. Restart the PC
A restart reloads Windows search and shell processes and can resolve temporary failures.
3. Install Windows updates
Open Settings → Windows Update, check for updates, install anything available, and restart.
4. Check Windows Search
Press Windows + R, enter services.msc, and check the Windows Search service. If it is stopped, start it and test search again.
5. Repair system files
Open Windows Terminal as administrator and run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, then sfc /scannow. Restart after both commands finish.
6. Test another search method
Try searching from File Explorer or another Windows search interface. If those work while Start menu search does not, the issue may be limited to the Start menu shell.
Final thoughts
Restart Explorer and install updates first. If search remains broken, check the Windows Search service and repair system files.
