How to Fix Windows 11 File Sharing Not Working

If you cannot access shared files or folders on a Windows 11 network, the cause may be network discovery, permissions, credentials, or firewall configuration. Make changes only on trusted private networks.

1. Confirm both computers are on the same network

Check that both PCs are connected to the intended router or local network. Guest Wi-Fi networks may isolate devices from one another. Restart the computers and router if other local network services are also failing.

2. Set the network profile appropriately

Open Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi or Ethernet and review the network profile. Use Private only on a network you trust. Do not change a public or shared network to Private simply to expose your files.

3. Enable network discovery and sharing

Open Control Panel, go to Network and Sharing Center, then Change advanced sharing settings. On a trusted private network, check that network discovery and file and printer sharing are enabled. Menu names can vary by Windows build.

4. Check the folder’s share permissions

Right-click the folder, open Properties, and review the Sharing tab and Advanced Sharing settings. Confirm the intended account or group has the required permission. Share only the specific folder needed; avoid granting Everyone full control or sharing an entire drive.

5. Verify NTFS security permissions

The Security tab also controls access. A user generally needs appropriate permissions both at the share level and the file-system level. If one level denies access, the share may still be inaccessible. Ask the folder owner or administrator to adjust permissions safely.

6. Check credentials

When prompted, enter credentials for an account recognized by the computer hosting the folder. Avoid sharing passwords in messages. If Windows keeps using outdated credentials, remove only the relevant saved entry in Credential Manager, then reconnect with the correct account.

7. Review firewall and security software

Use Windows Security to confirm the built-in firewall is active and that file-sharing traffic is allowed for the trusted private profile. Do not turn off the firewall globally. On managed networks, ask the administrator before changing rules.

8. Connect using the host computer name

In File Explorer’s address bar, enter the host computer name followed by the shared folder name using the standard network-share format. If name resolution is the issue, the host’s local IP address may help with diagnosis, but addresses can change.

Bottom line: Confirm a trusted network, enable discovery, and check both share and security permissions before changing firewall settings.
