Fix all your Windows errors automatically with FREE Advanced SystemCare app & enhance your online security.

A Windows Product Key is a 25-character code used to activate Windows operating systems. It looks like this: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. This key is essential for verifying that your copy of Windows is genuine and hasn’t been used on more devices than the Microsoft Software License Terms allow.

You may need your Windows Product Key for various reasons:

  • Reinstalling Windows: If you’re reinstalling Windows due to system issues or hardware changes, you’ll need the key to activate the OS again.
  • Upgrading Windows: When upgrading to a newer version of Windows, having the product key can be necessary for the installation process.
  • Troubleshooting Activation Issues: If Windows becomes deactivated for any reason, having the product key can help in resolving the issue quickly.
  • Transferring License: If you’re moving your Windows license to a new PC, you’ll need the product key to activate it on the new device.

Sometime you can get an error “0x8007025D” if your product key is invalid, so you might want to look into that.

And if you some time ago did a screenshot of your product key, but cannot find it now — see where screenshots are saved in Windows.

How to Find Windows Product Key

Where Is Your Windows Product Key Located?

The location of your Windows Product Key depends on how you acquired your copy of Windows:

  • Pre-installed by Manufacturer: If your PC came with Windows pre-installed, the product key might be stored in the BIOS/UEFI firmware or printed on a sticker on your computer or inside the battery compartment.
  • Retail Copy: If you bought a retail copy of Windows, the product key is usually on a label inside the Windows packaging.
  • Online Purchase: If you purchased Windows online from Microsoft, the product key should be in the confirmation email you received after purchase.
  • Digital License: If you upgraded to Windows 10 from an eligible copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8, you might not have a product key. Instead, your activation is managed via a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.

Here are several methods to find your Windows Licence Key:
