If your Windows 11 PC suddenly has no sound, the problem is often caused by the wrong output device, muted audio, a driver issue, or a Windows audio service. Try these methods in order.
1. Check the volume and output device
Click the speaker icon on the taskbar and make sure the volume is not muted. Open the sound output selector and choose the speakers, headphones, or other device you actually want to use.
2. Check the physical connection
If you use wired headphones or speakers, unplug and reconnect them. For USB audio devices, try another USB port. If you use Bluetooth headphones, make sure they are connected and selected as the output device.
3. Run the Windows audio troubleshooter
Open Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters. Find the audio troubleshooter and run it. Follow the recommended steps and test the sound again.
4. Restart Windows audio services
Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter. Find Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder. Right-click each service and choose Restart.
5. Check the audio device in Device Manager
Right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand Sound, video and game controllers. Look for your audio device and check whether Windows shows an error icon.
6. Update or reinstall the audio driver
In Device Manager, right-click the audio device and choose Update driver. If the problem started after a driver update, open the device properties and check whether Roll Back Driver is available. You can also uninstall the device and restart Windows so the driver can be detected again.
7. Check the app’s volume
If system sounds work but one application is silent, open Settings → System → Sound → Volume mixer. Make sure the affected app is not muted and is using the correct output device.
Still no sound?
Test another pair of headphones or speakers if possible. If another audio device works, the original device or its connection may be the source of the problem. If no audio device works, continue checking the Windows audio driver and hardware.
