Crackling, popping, or distorted sound in Windows 11 can come from an audio enhancement, driver mismatch, connection issue, or an application using the device incorrectly. Test one change at a time and check whether the problem affects headphones, speakers, or every audio output.
1. Check the physical connection
For wired headphones or speakers, reconnect the plug and test another port if available. For USB audio devices, connect directly to the PC rather than a hub. For Bluetooth audio, move closer to the computer and temporarily disconnect other Bluetooth devices.
2. Select the correct output
Open Settings → System → Sound and choose the intended output device. Adjust the volume and use the test option if shown. If several outputs are listed, make sure Windows is not sending sound to a monitor or unused device.
3. Turn off audio enhancements
In the selected output device’s properties, look for Audio enhancements and set them to Off for testing. Also temporarily disable spatial sound if it is enabled. These features can sometimes conflict with a driver or audio application.
4. Try another format
Open the device’s advanced sound properties and, if available, test a different default format. Apply the change and listen again. Restore the original format if it makes the sound worse or does not help.
5. Restart audio services and the PC
Save your work and restart Windows. A restart can clear a temporary audio-service problem. If crackling happens only after waking from sleep, note that pattern because it may point toward a driver or power-management issue.
6. Update or roll back the audio driver
Use Windows Update or the official support page for your PC, motherboard, or audio device. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, check Device Manager for a supported Roll Back Driver option. Avoid third-party driver updater utilities.
7. Check applications and CPU load
Test sound in more than one app. If only one program crackles, check its audio settings and updates. Open Task Manager and see whether CPU usage is unusually high during playback; close only unnecessary applications you recognize.
8. Run the audio troubleshooter
Open Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters and run the audio troubleshooter if it is available in your Windows build. Follow its recommendations and retest.
Bottom line: Verify the output and connection, disable enhancements temporarily, and update the correct driver. If distortion occurs across devices and applications, record when it happens and seek device-specific support.
