When Task Manager shows disk usage at 100 percent in Windows 11, the PC may feel slow, applications can take a long time to open, and the system may become unresponsive. Try these checks to find the cause.
1. Restart the PC
Restart Windows and check Task Manager again. If disk usage immediately returns to 100 percent, continue with the steps below.
2. Find the process using the disk
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Sort the Processes list by the Disk column and identify which application or Windows process is responsible.
3. Check Windows Update activity
Windows Update may temporarily use significant disk resources while downloading or installing updates. Open Settings → Windows Update and complete any pending updates, then restart.
4. Check available storage
Open Settings → System → Storage and make sure the Windows drive has enough free space. Remove unnecessary temporary files if the drive is nearly full.
5. Check startup applications
In Task Manager, open the Startup apps section and review programs that launch automatically. Disable nonessential applications and restart Windows to see whether disk activity improves.
6. Check drive health
Persistent 100 percent usage can sometimes indicate a storage device problem. Back up important files and use your PC manufacturer’s diagnostic tools if you notice unusual noises, errors, or repeated freezes.
Final thoughts
Use Task Manager to identify the process first. If a specific application is responsible, troubleshoot that application instead of changing unrelated Windows services.
