If your Windows 11 PC keeps restarting without warning, the cause may be an automatic restart after a system error, a driver problem, overheating, or a power issue. Work through these checks in order and save important files whenever the computer stays on long enough.
1. Check whether Windows is reporting a stop error
If a blue screen appears briefly, Windows may restart before you can read it. Open Settings → System → About → Advanced system settings. Under Startup and Recovery, choose Settings and temporarily clear Automatically restart. If a stop code appears next time, write it down; it can help identify the failing driver or component. Turn the option back on after troubleshooting if you prefer.
2. Review Reliability Monitor
Search Windows for View reliability history. Look for red critical-event markers around the time of each restart. Open the entries and note whether they mention a Windows failure, hardware error, or a particular application. Repeated identical events are more useful than unrelated warnings.
3. Install appropriate updates
Go to Settings → Windows Update and install available updates, then restart normally. Also check the computer manufacturer’s support page for your exact model for chipset, storage, and graphics drivers. Avoid third-party driver updater utilities.
4. Check temperature and power
Make sure the vents are clear and fans can move air. On a desktop, check that power cables are firmly connected; on a laptop, test with its correct charger. If restarts happen during demanding games or workloads, heat or unstable power may be involved. Stop using the machine if you notice a burning smell, unusual electrical sounds, or a swollen battery.
5. Repair Windows system files
Open Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator and run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. When it finishes, run sfc /scannow. Restart after both commands complete and note any repair messages.
6. Undo recent changes
If the restarts began after installing hardware, software, or a driver, disconnect newly added peripherals and uninstall or roll back the recent change where appropriate. If Windows cannot stay running, use Windows Recovery Environment and its Startup Settings or System Restore options.
When to seek help
If the computer continues restarting before Windows loads, or hardware errors appear repeatedly, back up accessible data and contact the device manufacturer or a qualified technician.
Bottom line: Capture any stop code, inspect Reliability Monitor, update model-specific drivers, and check heat and power before making major changes.
