When OneDrive stops syncing in Windows 11, files may remain pending, show an error, or fail to appear on other devices. Check the account, connection, storage, and sync status before unlinking your PC.
1. Check OneDrive’s status
Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the taskbar notification area. If it is hidden, open the system-tray overflow. Read any warning or error message and use Resume syncing if syncing is paused. Make sure you are signed in to the expected Microsoft or work account.
2. Confirm the internet connection
Open a few unrelated websites to confirm the connection works. If you use a VPN, proxy, or metered connection, test whether the issue changes when it is temporarily disconnected, following any workplace rules. Avoid disabling security software permanently.
3. Check available storage
Verify that the OneDrive account has available cloud storage and that the PC’s drive has free space. Large files may fail to upload if either location is full. Remove only files you no longer need, and empty the recycle bin only after checking its contents.
4. Check file and folder restrictions
Look for unsupported characters in file names, excessively long paths, or files currently open in another program. Close the application using the file and try a simple rename if OneDrive identifies a naming issue. For shared libraries, confirm you still have permission.
5. Restart OneDrive
Right-click the OneDrive cloud icon and choose Quit OneDrive. Open Start, search for OneDrive, and launch it again. Allow time for the status to refresh and see whether the pending files begin syncing.
6. Install updates
Check Windows Update and update OneDrive through its supported update mechanism or official Microsoft source. Restart Windows after updates if requested.
7. Reset only as a later step
If ordinary checks fail, consult Microsoft’s current OneDrive reset instructions for your installed version. A reset may rebuild sync connections and take time; it should not be the first troubleshooting step. Do not delete the local OneDrive folder to force a fix.
When syncing still fails
Record the exact error text, affected file, and whether the issue affects one folder or the entire account. For a work or school account, contact the organization’s administrator if access or policy restrictions may be involved.
Bottom line: Resume syncing, verify the account and storage, inspect file-specific errors, and restart OneDrive before considering a reset.
