If the Windows 11 Search button or search box is missing from the taskbar, the feature may have been disabled in taskbar settings or Windows Explorer may need to be restarted.
1. Check taskbar search settings
- Open Settings → Personalization → Taskbar.
- Find the Search option.
- Select the search style you prefer, such as a button or search box, when available.
2. Restart Windows Explorer
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Find Windows Explorer, right-click it, and select Restart. Check the taskbar again.
3. Restart the PC
Restarting Windows can reload the taskbar and search components after a temporary shell problem.
4. Install Windows updates
Open Settings → Windows Update and install available updates. Restart after installation.
5. Repair Windows system files
Open Windows Terminal as administrator and run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, followed by sfc /scannow. Restart Windows afterward.
6. Check whether Search works from Windows
Try pressing the Windows key and typing a search term. If search works there but the taskbar button is missing, the problem is more likely related to taskbar configuration.
Final thoughts
Check taskbar settings first, then restart Explorer and install updates. System file repair is a useful later step if Windows search components are behaving incorrectly.
