How to Fix Windows 11 Sound Output Device Missing

If your speakers, headphones, or other playback device have disappeared from Windows 11, check the selected output, connections, audio services, and drivers. Follow these steps before reinstalling anything.

1. Check the physical connection

For USB or 3.5 mm devices, reconnect the cable and try another suitable port. For Bluetooth headphones, confirm they are paired and connected. If you use a monitor over HDMI or DisplayPort, remember that it may appear as an audio output only when the display and graphics driver support audio.

2. Open Sound settings

Go to Settings → System → Sound. Under Output, check the available device list and select the intended speakers or headset. Open More sound settings if you need the classic Playback list. Right-click in the list and enable showing disabled devices; if your device appears disabled, enable it.

3. Run the audio troubleshooter

Open Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters and run the audio troubleshooter if available. Apply a suggested fix only after reviewing what it will change, then test playback.

4. Restart Windows audio services

Search for Services and open it. Find Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder. If they are stopped, start them; if running, use Restart where available. You may need administrator permission.

5. Inspect Device Manager

Right-click Start and choose Device Manager. Expand Sound, video and game controllers and Audio inputs and outputs. Check for warning symbols. Use Scan for hardware changes, then install an appropriate driver from Windows Update or your PC/audio-device manufacturer’s official support page.

6. Roll back a recent driver

If the output disappeared immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties in Device Manager and check the Driver tab for Roll Back Driver. Use it only if available and the timing matches the problem.

7. Test another app or device

Try playing audio in another application and, if possible, connect a different headset or speaker. If only one app is affected, select the correct output inside that app. If no device appears after driver checks, consult the computer or audio-device manufacturer.

Bottom line: Verify the connection and output selection first, then check disabled devices, audio services, and model-specific drivers.
